The Loop Road

Posted by katie on 4/24/2008 on katie's blog

Yesterday I decided I needed a change of pace, so I decided that I was going to do a classic road bike ride here in Moab. The ride is about 65 miles and it goes up past Mill Creek (5000 foot gain), then loops around through Castle Valley (past Castleton Tower) and down the river road, past Big Bend.

I must have looked like a total gumby out there. My bike, well, I'm not sure if it's too small or if I'm just used to riding bikes too big. Then there's the pack I was carrying -- gosh, I might need warm clothes, extra water, etc. And there was no lycra in sight. No jersey sporting some loud advertisement on the front. Just me and my prAna skort, five-tennies and climbing top.

I'm naturally WAY more inclined to endurance sports than power sports, and it's been a really long time since I've pushed myself cardiovascularly, so it felt really good. Of course, today I've been non-stop eating and my whole body hurts. My bum is the worst of it -- I think I need a softer seat -- that and my massively sunburnt legs.

Tomorrow, though, we're heading up to Mill Creek for the first time this season. Hopefully things are dry, because I'm pretty exciting to grab holds instead of the space in between them for a while!

I believe in the big cushy seats, on a bulky fat tire Schwinn; something like the bike Pee Wee Herman would ride. Comfort and casual style,,no off road workout for me.
